The Health & Safety at Work Act 2015 & Regulations are the legislation in New Zealand that cover Workplace Health & Safety.

Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking

(Is generally a Company name or sole-trader)

Is a CEO, Director or Board of Directors.  

(A person who has a significant influence

over the running of the Company).

Employees, Contractors, Sub-Contractors, an apprentice or trainee, Labour Hire, People on work experience, Home workers & Volunteers.  (There are some exemptions).

What is a Notifiable Event?

If you have a Notifiable Event you must notify WorkSafe NZ.  (The Government Department who enforce Health & Safety legislation in New Zealand), as soon as possible, in the fastest means available.  Phone:  0800 030 040 (24-hour free calling number).

A Notifiable Event includes:  (Click the words below to see the definition beneath it).

Refers to a single or multiple death of a worker or any other person

Means any of the following injuries or illnesses that require the person to have immediate treatment (other than first aid) for:  the amputation of any part of his or her body; a serious head injury; a serious eye injury; a serious burn; the separation of his or her skin from an underlying tissue (such as de-gloving or scalping; a spinal injury; the loss of a bodily function (A guideline generally where a person is unable to perform normal duties for more than 7 days running); serious lacerations; an injury or illness that requires the person to be admitted to a hospital for immediate treatment; an injury or illness that requires the person to have medical treatment within 48 hours of exposure to a substance; any serious infection (including occupational zoonosis which is a disease that can be passed between animals and humans) to which the carrying out of work is a significant contributing factor; including any infection that is attributable to carrying out work with micro-organisms; or that involves providing treatment or care to a person; or that involves contact with human blood or bodily substances; or that involves handling or contact with animals, animal hides, animal skins, animal wool or hair, animal carcasses, or animal waste products; or that involves handling or contact with fish or marine mammals.

Means an unplanned or uncontrolled incident in relation to a workplace that exposes a worker or any other person to a serious risk to that person’s health or safety arising from an immediate or imminent exposure to: an escape, a spillage, or a leakage of a substance; or an implosion, explosion, or fire; or an escape of gas or steam; or an escape of a pressurized substance; or an electric shock; or the fall or release from a height of any plant, substance, or thing; or the collapse, overturning, failure, or malfunction of, or damage to, any plant or the collapse or partial collapse of a structure; or the collapse or failure of an excavation or any shoring supporting an excavation; or the inrush of water, mud, or gas in workings in an underground excavation or tunnel; or the interruption of the main system of ventilation in an underground excavation or tunnel; or a collision between 2 vessels, a vessel capsize, or the inrush of water into a vessel.

Intro to Workplace Health & Safety:   (4 hour)  Non-unit standard.  Can be made industry specific & include your own documentation for practical exercise.  Course content:  Legislative requirements;  Explanation of PCBU, Officer  & Workers & their responsibilities;  Hazard identification;  Risk assessment & controls;  Initial action at an incident;  Notifiable event explanation.

Marae Package:  Course content:  Covers Intro Health & Safety course but focused on the Marae.  We can attend powhiri & do a practical session on-site.

Incident Investigation:  (4 hour or full day)  Non-unit standard.  Video clips & photograph examples.  Course content:  Legislative requirements;  Initial action at an incident; Notifiable event explanation; Incident analysis;  Active & Root causes; Prevention options;    Full day includes a practical investigation.  (Scenario or review one of your incidents).

Health & Safety Meeting / Tool-box Package: (1 hour, Once a month for 12 months- at your workplace).  Course content:  Contains 12 half-hour training sessions.  Short, snappy & covering a range of Health & Safety topics.
